Hello First Grade Falcon Families,
Riggs: Update and Sentences
You’ve probably noticed by now that we’ve taken a break from learning new spelling words each day. This is because we’re practicing writing sentences in class so that the students are ready to write sentences as a part of their nightly Riggs homework! We’re also learning how to write capital letters.
Sentences are about to become a part of Riggs homework every night. As long as we learn a new word, the students should write a sentence using that word for homework. For the first sentences we will write as a part of homework, however, I will assign that the students use the last three words we learned to write their sentences. The reason behind this being that new words and the newness of sentences might be too much all at once.
Here are the sentence requirements:
Math
We have been learning many new concepts in math, as usual, but we’re taking a bit of a simmer break to work on the “addition algorithm”. The addition algorithm is what we know as carrying numbers over from the ones column to the tens column when adding two, two-digit numbers. This is a very abstract concept, and it can take quite a bit of practice before the students have mastered it. Saxon math teaches the addition algorithm in a really cool way, and I would like to do my best to describe it to you so that you can help your student.
The Saxon Math Addition Algorithm:
Please also note that math homework may look different for a little while as we continue to practice the addition algorithm.
Student-Led Conferences Reminder
Students-led conferences are taking place on this Friday, February 1st from 12:00-3:00PM. This is an open-house setting for you to come and see what your student has been learning. Progress reports and Winter MAP scores will be available at this time. If you would like to schedule a conference to further discuss your student’s progress, please contact me and we can set up a time to meet.

Here are the sentence requirements:
- Sentences should be written below any new and/or checked words on the Riggs homework paper.
- One sentence should be written for each of the assigned (new) words.
- Each sentence should include:
- The new word
- Two or more other words to complete the sentence
- NOTE: All other words used in the sentence should be taken from the student’s spelling notebook (because the student should already know how to spell and mark these past words correctly, and the spelling notebook can be used as a reference for spelling and marking).
- A “pinky” space in between each word (a space as wide as their pinky finger)
- A capital letter at the beginning
- Correct punctuation at the end (., !, ?)
- All words spelled correctly
- All words marked correctly
- Best handwriting!!
