SCIENCE/HISTORY
Current Studies: We concluded our studies on the solar system and the inside of our Earth, but will revisit rocks and minerals on our field trip next month. We are currently studying about the history of our country. There are a lot of people and events involved in our country's history from the first English settlers to Westward expansion, but the students aren't required to remember it all. They are required to remember and understand the following big ideas:
*Why did the first English settlers want to go to the New World? (to find gold, silver, gems, wood, and, for some, to worship in their own way)
*Was it easy or hard for the settlers when they got to the new world? Why? (Hard – they had to start from scratch in creating everything they needed including gardens and houses.)
*Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July? (Because that’s the day that the colonists officially became independent from Great Britain.)
*Why did Lewis and Clark travel west? (Thomas Jefferson asked them to travel west and find out what the land was like so that more people could move there.)
Sneak Preview:
*We are going to Champoeg Park this Friday, March 14th. There we will experience what life was like for the first pioneers who came to Oregon. Although we don't learn about pioneers in first grade, there are many similarities between Colonial Life and pioneer life.
Support Idea:
*Colonial life was hard work for children and families, and they didn't have any electronics! Take a break from screen time and have your child help you with “Colonial” chores and projects at home, like cooking, cleaning, chopping/collecting wood, sewing, and candle making.

1st grade won the Golden Lunchbox award for this month!
Important Updates
*A homework tracking sheet and survey was sent home today.  Please fill it out and return it to school next Wednesday, March 19th so that the teachers can evaluate and improve homework.
*We’re going to try something new in first grade -- “Academic Free Choice” time.  This will be about 35-40 minutes at the end of the day on Thursdays where the students are allowed to create or work on anything they like as long as it relates to something we are learning or have learned in class.  Please ask your student about it and share feedback with me!
*We will have a “Published Books Celebration” on Thursday, April 3rd at 3:00 P.M.  The students have been working hard on their writing, and it will be very exciting for them to share and celebrate their accomplishments.  When you come, expect to be read to by your child as well as other children who need an adult to share with.
Quick Reminders
*Field trip tomorrow!
*Save the date for our “Published Books Celebration”, Thursday, April 3rd at 3:00 P.M.
