SCIENCE/HISTORY   (continued…)
Current Studies: We are currently studying about the history of our country. There are a lot of people and events involved in our country's history from the first English settlers to Westward expansion, but the students aren't required to remember it all. They are required to remember and understand the following big ideas:
*Why did the first English settlers want to go to the New World? (to find gold, silver, gems, wood, and, for some, to worship in their own way)
*Was it easy or hard for the settlers when they got to the new world? Why? (Hard – they had to start from scratch in creating everything they needed including gardens and houses.)
*Why do we celebrate the Fourth of July? (Because that’s the day when the Declaration of Independence was signed, and the beginning of when the colonists became independent from Great Britain.)
*Why did Lewis and Clark travel west? (Thomas Jefferson asked them to travel west and find out what the land was like so that more people could move there.)
Sneak Preview:
*After this unit we will move on to two science mini-units on matter and electricity.
Support Idea:
*Go for a walk together and imagine that you’re Lewis and Clark on the Oregon Trail.  Observe native plants and animals.

Story sharing at our Published Books Celebration
Important Updates
*The Published Books Celebration was a success!  It was a busy day preparing for the celebration in first grade, and a bit chaotic toward the end, but all in all it was a lot of fun.  I will record the students’ writing progress by examining their books, and then I’ll send them home as soon as I can.  Make sure to celebrate their successes at home!
*MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing is coming!  The students will be tested in both math and reading.  The data will be used to show growth as well as areas of needed support.  Students should get lots of rest and have a hearty breakfast beforehand!
*There is a K-4 Spring Music Concert coming up on Thursday, April 17th from 6:30-7:30PM.This is where students will share songs they have learned while under the instruction of our music teacher, Mr. Littledyke.  Students should dress nicely (to t-shirts or shorts, may wear uniform)
*I will be absent two days this month: Thursday, April 17th and Friday, April 25th.

Quick Reminders
*Save the dates for MAP testing, the the K-4 Spring Music Concert, and the All School Assembly hosted by 1st grade! (Dates and times below)
