Updates: Upcoming Events, Saxon Math and Writing Utensils: Pencils vs. Pens

Hello First Grade Falcon Families,

Below you will find details on some upcoming events, as well as some helpful reminders about math and writing utensil usage.

UPCOMING EVENTS

CHPCS WINTER PERFORMANCE AND BOOK FAIR @ BARNES AND NOBLE
Each class from CHPCS will be presenting a song or dance related to what they’re studying in class.  This will be at the Clackamas Town Center Barnes and Noble on Saturday, December 8th from 10:00AM - 12:00PM.  First grade will be performing at 11:20AM.  The students need to arrive 10 minutes before their performance time to get ready.  Students should be in school uniform and may wear a sombrero if they have one (because they’re performing a modern Mexican dance taught to them by our very own Mr. Weaver!).  Up to 20% of sales that day (including coffee and treats) will go toward the CHPCS curriculum enhancement fund!

First Grade Field Trip to Downtown Milwaukie
We need parent volunteers for the field trip to downtown Milwaukie on Friday, January 11th.  Please contact our classroom field trip volunteer coordinators, Mrs. Sanborn and Mrs. Higgins about volunteering.  Thank you!

HELPFUL REMINDERS

Saxon Math
At our staff meeting on Friday we had the pleasure of refreshing our understanding of Saxon Math with an expert.  She reminded us that Saxon math homework is supposed to be EASY!  The students have already practiced the concepts in class, so they should breeze through the homework as it is just for extra practice.

Writing Utensils: Pencils vs. Pens
The CHPCS teaching staff has come to a consensus on writing utensil usage.  What you need to know for primary grades (K-2) is that students should only use pencils with the erasers cut off for all assignments.  There are two main reasons why we don’t want students to erase: (1)We want to see student mistakes and (2)We want students to think carefully before they write.  The exception to this is when pen is specifically assigned by a teacher.  Thank you for supporting our curriculum philosophies!

Thank you for reading and continually supporting your student,

Mrs. Varis
